CHILDREN at Chewton Mendip Church of England Primary School have won £1,000 for having the best environmentally friendly grounds in Somerset.

The prize has been awarded by Somerset Wildlife Trust in a competition sponsored by Western Power Distribution.

Janet Keeble, from the trust, said: "Chewton Mendip really impressed the judges with their focussed project, which showed clear ideas of how what they wanted to do would bring benefits to wildlife, people and the larger area.

"The school demonstrated how the project linked in with the curriculum whilst showing how wildlife attracted to the new green area could move through corridors into the area beyond the school.

"Their physical plans, where we will provide some practical help and expertise, include making their current pond bigger, planting all kinds of different shrubs and flowers, creating ifnromation boards and building quiet seating and bird feeders."
